Navy Honor and Award Winners

Out of a class of 827 seaman recruits (SR) an honor graduate is chosen from each division (11) and four award winners from the entire class, of which Lane was one (the Navy League Award). This picture is taken from the section reserved for honor/award family. Lane is in the back row of award winners.

















Below is a picture of one of the jumbo screens used for graduation ceremonies. Lane's picture was broadcast with his hometown information when he received the Navy League Award as one of the top recruits of his class. The mother of a (female) recruit sitting next to me said, "My, he is a good looking young man!" Through out the ceremony, Lane moved with grace and assurance. Terrific stuff.

















Lane and Dad just after graduation ceremonies. I don't look like I'm crying too badly. The yellow scarf indicates that Lane was part of the division responsible for flag, drill, drum and band performance at graduation. It was here I learned that Lane had already participated in three graduations! He and two other drummers were asked to develop a 5-minute drum line performance for each. Afterwards, at the reception, Lane's Captain praised Lane for his outstanding performance at graduations and at boot camp.

















Here, Lane receives his Navy League Award commendation letter from one his superiors at the Naval Recruit Training Command. To a person, each praised Lane and expressed a firm belief in his bright future. Lane received a plaque and medallion as well. Note the three chevrons on Lane's left sleeve indicating his E-3 rate, which Lane achieved at an unusually remarkable speed.


Lane was chosen to receive the Navy League Award through a combination of peer voting and being selected by a final reviewing board of officers and high-ranking enlisted superiors. Way to go, son!!
