Saturday morning started early with a 10 mile run for me, John and Scott. John and Scott are both training for the Twin Cities Marathon and we traced a route they covered time and again when they were running high school cross country. It was funny to listen to them quote their cross country coach , who is still feared and revered, as we ran the hilly, rural route... After some pancakes for breakfast we were on our way to the Black Hills.
First up, a stop at Al's Oasis, a childhood favorite of John's. Perhaps the taste was better remembered than experienced? But John, Ava and Lane had a buffalo meat burger they all seemed to enjoy....
Striking a pose by the big buffalo....
Fueled by lunch at Al's Oasis we made our way to the Badlands. No reason not to visit the Badlands on what might be the hottest day of the year....
The kiddos climbing a rock....
Proud Dad....
Lane, who is ready to really tackle the Badlands on his next trip....
During our trip to the Visitor Center we saw Native Americans doing Pow Wow rituals. They were nice enough to pose for a picture with the girls....
No trip to Western South Dakota would be complete without a stop at Wall Drug. Here we indulged our commitment to ice cream every.day.
When we arrived at our hotel Amelia made quick work of setting up her little nest, blanket and all....
